New Paper: The Extinction Risk–Range Change Relationship: Evidence From the Fossil Record

Our staff member Eileen Straube, together with Manuel J. Steinbauer (University of Bayreuth), Seth Finnegan (University of California, Berkeley; Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute), and Gregor H. Mathes (University of Passau), has published a new scientific study in the journal Global Ecology and Biogeography.
The publication, “The Extinction Risk–Range Change Relationship: Evidence From the Fossil Record,” uses global fossil data from the past 23 million years to examine how changes in geographic range, as well as the absolute size of distributional ranges of marine genera, influence the extinction probability of a genus over long temporal scales. The aim of the study was to better understand the role that geographic range changes (percentage loss or gain in area) play in the extinction or survival of genera across deep time.
