Study on the applicability of species distribution models for predicting extinction risks under climate change
29.04.2023
The article discusses the challenges and limitations of using species distribution models (SDMs) to predict extinction risk due to climate change. It argues that the relationship between range size decline and extinction risk is not well understood and that the IUCN Red List classification criteria are often misused. However, despite these challenges, SDMs remain the most accessible method for assessing climate-related extinction risk across multiple species, and the article provides guidelines for their appropriate use.
